About Johnston Psychology Associates
Susan L. Johnston, Ph.D and Frank C. Johnston, Ph.D. make up the psychotherapy practice known as Johnston Psychology Associates. We have been practice partners since 1989. Starting at 16 N. Goodman St. and later moving to 480 White Spruce Blvd., we now practice at 160 Allens Creek Rd. Rochester, NY 14618. In our latest office, we share space with three other psychologists and one psychiatrist.
Drs. Johnston met at Columbia University in the City of New York, completed their PhD training at the University at Albany and did their predoctoral internship at the University at Buffalo. Prior to independent practice, Dr. Sue Johnston worked for SUNY Brockport and Oak Orchard Community Health Services in their mental health services. Alternatively, Dr. Frank Johnston worked for Family Service of Rochester, the child and adolescent clinic at Rochester General Hospital, the Community Learning Development Center at RIT, and the childcare center at SUNY Brockport.
Dr. Sue Johnston specializes in working with adult women and couples.At the present time, she has a very limited practice. Dr. Frank Johnston works with adults with anxiety, depression, trauma and self-esteem issues, men and couples. Additionally, he has extensive training in play therapy and adjunct parent counseling. He also enjoys working with career issues and performance-enhancing psychology with athletes, dancers, musicians, and high-risk populations (ie, firemen, police, surgeons) .
Dr. Sue Johnston engaged in research in the area of balancing work and family responsibilities among career-oriented women. In May 1993, she received the President's Early Career Recognition award from the New York State Psychological Association. Since 1995, Dr. Sue Johnston has been listed in
Marquis Who's Who in American Women.
Dr. Frank Johnston has published in the areas of career and talent development, optimal performance and sports psychology. He is particularly interested in positive psychology: character strengths, gratitude and "flow". His most recent article with Duane Beck, PhD is in the February 2012 issue of
(an American Society of Quality publication) entitled "The Power of Positive" which examined positive psychology as the human element to the business efficiency process of lean six sigma. In conjunction with the Greater Rochester Chiropractic Group, he offers workshops on "Positive Psychology & Chronic Pain". Dr. Frank Johnston also does workshops on "Positive Psychology & Anxiety", "Positive Psychology & Depression", "Positive Psychology & Relationships" and "Positive Psychology & Your Career".
When indicated, we have ongoing partnerships with child, adolescent and adult psychiatrists for medication consultations. We are also available to coordinate your treatment with your Primary Care Provider.
